Reggiano

The Province of Reggio Emilia, also called Reggiano, features a rural low-lying area to the north, while the south is occupied by hills and mountains. The agricultural centers in the north house some historic landmarks, while several castles can be found among the mountains to the south.

Guastalla

Guastalla is a town located near the Po river in the Province of Reggio Emilia. The city emerged during the Middle Ages and later became the seat of a county and then a duchy. The Duchy of Guastalla survived until 1748, when it was annexed by the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, which was renamed Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. During its period of independence, Guastalla thrived as an important fortified town and housed many artists.

Ducal Palace of Guastalla

The Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale) is a Renaissance building in the center of Guastalla. Now it houses a museum on the history of the city, also featuring various paintings. The palace faces the main square of the town, which also hosts the 16th-century Guastalla Cathedral (Duomo di Guastalla).

Gualtieri

Gualtieri is a small town located near the river Po north of Reggio Emilia. The city was the seat of a small marquisate between the 16th and 17th century and it features some historic buildings dating from this period.

Palazzo Bentivoglio

Palazzo Bentivoglio is a large palace in Gualtieri which was once the residence of the local lords, built in the 16th century and later expanded. The palace is adorned with a series of wonderful frescoes and it houses many artworks by 20th-century painter Antonio Ligabue, who died in Gualtieri in 1965. The building faces a large square, which also features the 18th-century Church of Santa Maria della Neve and a beautiful Clock Tower.

Brescello

Brescello is a small town in the Province of Reggio Emilia, near the river Po. The city was founded in ancient times and thrived as the Roman town of Brixellum, which was destroyed in the Early Middle Ages. Today Brescello is best known as the set for the popular series of Italian movies about Don Camillo and Peppone.

Museo Peppone e Don Camillo

The Museo Peppone e Don Camillo is a museum dedicated on the series of movies about the two characters, which were set in Brescello. The museum displays various props and items used in the movies, and even a tank similar to the one that appears in one of the films.

Gattatico

Gattatico is a municipality in the Province of Reggio Emilia, located between Reggio Emilia and Parma. The seat of the municipality is in the settlement of Praticello, and the area is mostly devoted to agriculture.

Casa Cervi

Casa Cervi is a country house near Praticello, once inhabited by the Cervi family. During World War II, the seven Cervi brothers actively took part in the Italian resistance against fascism, and they were all executed in 1943. The house now serves as a museum honoring the family and the fight against the fascist dictatorship in Italy.

Correggio

Correggio is a town in the Province of Reggio Emilia, located in the Po Valley near Carpi. The city emerged in the Late Middle Ages as the seat of a small signoria, which became part of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio in 1616. The town is famous for being the hometown of Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, best known as Correggio.

Museo Il Correggio

Museo Il Correggio is an art museum in Correggio. The museum takes its name from Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, usually known as Correggio, who was born in this city in 1489. Some works by Correggio are housed in the museum, which also includes paintings by other artists, along with various artifacts and archaeological findings. The museum is hosted inside Palazzo dei Principi, which was once the residence of the local lords and it is adjacent to the Basilica of San Quirino, the main church of the town.

Quattro Castella

Quattro Castella is a town located at the foot of the hills south of Reggio Emilia. The city takes its name, meaning “four castles”, from the four ancient fortifications located on the surrounding hills, of which now only one survives intact.

Bianello Castle

The Bianello Castle is a medieval castle on a hill south of Quattro Castella. Built around the 8th century, the fortress was later the residence of Matilda of Canossa, who ruled over a large territory in Northern Italy between the 11th and 12th century. In the following centuries the castle was adorned with adorned with a rich series of frescoes.

Canossa

Canossa is a municipality among the hills in the Province of Reggio Emilia. Canossa is known for its medieval fortress and for the powerful Canossa family, who ruled over a large territory in Northern Italy during the Middle Ages.

Canossa Castle

The Canossa Castle was built in the 10th century on top of a hill by a family of Lombard origins. Over the following decades, the power of this family grew to rule over many territories and they became known as Canossa, from the name of the castle. In 1077 the castle was the site of the famous Humiliation of Canossa, when the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV submitted to Pope Gregory VII during the Investiture controversy. The castle was destroyed in 1255 and now its ruins can be visited.

Castelnovo ne’ Monti

Castelnovo ne’ Monti is the town among the Apennines of the Province of Reggio Emilia, and the main center in the area. The town is known for being surrounded by a beautiful natural environment.

Pietra di Bismantova

The Pietra di Bismantova is a peculiar and isolated geological formation in the shape of a large plateau, located just south of Castelnovo ne’ Monti. The area was inhabited in prehistoric times and it was later the site of a fortification. The 15th-century Hermitage of Bismantova (Eremo di Bismantova) is located at the foot of the mountain. The area is part of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park, and it houses a rich flora and fauna.
