Mugello

The Mugello is a historic region located north of Florence. This region includes the valley formed by the Sieve river, but also an area located north of the watershed of the Apennines, at the border with Emilia-Romagna. Several historic towns and attractions can be found in the Mugello.

Vaglia

Vaglia is a small town located on the hills north of Florence. Its territory houses various historic attracions.

Villa Demidoff

Villa di Pratolino was a residence of the Medici family located near Vaglia. The palace was erected during the 16th century, but it was demolished in the 18th century. The surviving structures were later restored and turned into Villa Demidoff. The current villa is surrounded by the large park that once belonged to the original palace. Among the various attractions in the park the most notable is the Apennine Colossus (Colosso dell’Appennino), an elaborate 16th-century statue by Giambologna depicting the personification of the Apennine mountains in the form of a colossal figure.

Sanctuary of Montesenario

The Sanctuary of Montesenario (Santuario di Montesenario) is a historic religious complex founded in the 13th century and located on a mountain near Vaglia. Over the centuries, the complex has been embellished with numerous artworks, and it is among the most important sanctuaries in the region.

Scarperia e San Piero

Scarperia e San Piero is a municipality created from the merger of the towns of Scarperia and San Piero a Sieve, located in the Mugello region north of Florence. The two villages have various historic buildings, but now are mostly known for hosting a motorsport race track.

Mugello Circuit

The Mugello Circuit (Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello) is a racing circuit located near Scarperia. The track was inaugurated in 1974 to replace a historic public road circuit, and it has hosted numerous editions of the Italian Motorcycle Grand Prix and the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix of Formula One.

Palazzo dei Vicari

Palazzo dei Vicari is a historic building in Scarperia, originally erected in the 14th century and later expanded and restored various times. The palace features some ancient frescoes and houses a museum dedicated to the traditional production of knives in the town, which goes back several centuries.

Palazzuolo sul Senio

Palazzuolo sul Senio is a tiny town located among the Apennines in the Metropolitan City of Florence. The town became part of the Republic of Florence in the 14th century, and forms part of the so-called Tuscan Romagna, a small section of Tuscany located on the northern side of the Apennines.

Palazzo dei Capitani

Palazzo dei Capitani is a medieval building in Palazzuolo sul Senio, now housing two museums. The Archaeological Museum of Alto Mugello (Museo Archeologico dell’Alto Mugello) is located here, and features a rich and interesting series of archaeological findings dating between prehistory and the Late Middle Ages. The lower floor of the palace houses the Mountain Folk Museum (Museo delle Genti di Montagna), dedicated to the history of the local traditional mountain life.
