Genoa – Outskirts of Genoa

Outside the old town of Genoa are the mostly residential districts located in the hills and along the coast. Some of the most important neighborhoods to the east are Albaro, Quarto dei Mille, and Nervi, while to the west are the populous suburbs of Cornigliano, Sestri Ponente, Pegli, Pra’, and Voltri. This area became part of Genoa between 1873 and 1926.

Victory Arch

The Victory Arch (Arco della Vittoria) is a large mounumental arch located in the middle of Piazza della Vittoria in Genoa. The arch was inaugurated in 1931, and dedicated to the Genoese soldiers who died during World War I. The reliefs that decorate the monument depict allegories of the Italian soldiers and some of the major battles of the war.

Corso Italia

Corso Italia is a promenade in Genoa, crossing the neighborhoods of Foce, Albaro, and Boccadasse. The wide road runs along the coast and offers a great view on the sea. Various landmarks are located along the promenade, such as the medieval Abbey of San Giuliano and the seaside Church of Sant’Antonio in Boccadasse.

Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno

The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno (Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno) is one of the largest and most important monumental cemeteries in Europe. The cemetery was erected in the 19th century in the Staglieno neighborhood in Val Bisagno, and it houses the remains of many illustrious Genoese. Numerous elaborate monuments, statues, and memorials adorn the cemetery.

Nervi Parks

The Nervi Parks (Parchi di Nervi) are a system of parks and gardens located near the coast in the neighborhood of Nervi, featuring numerous tree and plant species. The park consists of the gardens of some historic villas now serving as museums. Among these, Villa Saluzzo Serra houses the Modern Art Gallery, a collection of 19th and 20th century artworks, while the nearby Wolfsoniana is instead focused on modern decorative arts and design. Villa Grimaldi Fassio hosts another collection of modern artworks known as Raccolte Frugone, while a few more art pieces are housed in Villa Luxoro.

Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi

Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi is a seaside pedestrian promenade in the neighborhood of Nervi. The trail is a popular tourist attraction thanks to its beautiful panoramic view on the sea, and it is located in front of the Nervi Parks. The Gropallo Tower, a 16th-century defensive tower, is located on the coast along the trail.

Pegli Maritime Museum

The 16th-century Villa Doria Centurione in Pegli hosts the Pegli Maritime Museum (Museo Navale di Pegli), focused on the maritime history of Genoa. The museum displays the long seafaring history of the city, with exhibits on the Genoese colonies, maps, and ship models, as well as various paintings and prints.

Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini

Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini is a 19th-century villa in Pegli, which includes a large park with many decorations and attractions, and the rich Clelia Durazzo Grimaldi Botanical Garden (Orto Botanico Clelia Durazzo Grimaldi). The villa houses the Museum of Ligurian Archaeology (Museo di Archeologia Ligure), an archaeological museum featuring numerous findings spanning from the Paleolithic to the Roman age, including Greek and Egyptian antiquities.
