Crotone

Crotone is a city located on the Ionian Sea in Calabria. It was founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century BCE, and soon became one of the most flourishing cities of Magna Graecia. Crotone remained among the most prominent Greek colonies for a long time, and in the 6th century BCE Pythagoras founded his school here. Over time the city declined and was hit by several wars, until it was conquered by the Romans. Crotone has been a small regional center ever since, and in 1992 it became the capital of its own province.

Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna

The Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna (Parco Archeologico di Capo Colonna) is an archaeological site located on a promontory along the coast south of Crotone. This area houses the ruins of the Temple of Hera Lacinia (Tempio di Hera Lacinia), which was one of the most important sanctuaries of Magna Graecia during the Greek age. The temple is surrounded by the ruins of various other ancient structures. The park includes the Archaeological Museum of Capo Colonna (Museo Archeologico di Capo Colonna), which houses ancient objects found here.

Charles V Castle

The Charles V Castle (Castello di Carlo V) is a medieval castle in Crotone. Originally erected in the 9th century on the site of the ancient Greek acropolis, it was later reworked during the Renaissance, under the rule of Charles V. The structure is still well preserved, and now hosts the Civic Museum of Crotone (Museo Civico di Crotone), which includes exhibitions on the history of the city.

National Archaeological Museum of Crotone

The National Archaeological Museum of Crotone (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Crotone) is an archaeological museum dedicated to the history of Crotone. Its collection includes numerous findings unearthed around the city, mostly dating from the Greek era. The museum also houses objects and artworks dating between prehistory and the Middle Ages.

Isola di Capo Rizzuto

Isola di Capo Rizzuto is a town located south of Crotone. The city was founded in the Middle Ages, and it has developed recently thanks to the seaside resorts located in its territory.

Le Castella Castle

Le Castella is a hamlet located on the Ionian Sea south of Isola di Capo Rizzuto. The small town is known for the Le Castella Castle, an ancient fortress almost completely surrounded by the sea. The castle was originally built as a fort by Greek colonists, while the modern structure dates from the 15th century. Now restored, it has been turned into a tourist attraction.

Santa Severina

Santa Severina is a town located among the hills west of Crotone. Inhabited since ancient times, the town is known for its ancient castle and for offering a great view on the surrounding territory.

Santa Severina Castle

The Santa Severina Castle is a fortress built in Santa Severina by the Normans during the 11th century. The fort was later expanded and turned into a noble residence. The castle has been restored, and now it hosts a museum with archaeological findings unearthed around the town.
