Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of the rugged coastline on the southern side of the Sorrento Peninsula. This coast is located west of Salerno and it is known all over the world for its natural beauty. The Amalfi Coast has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy since the 18th century, and it is often visited by celebrities. The area is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, and features some of the most beautiful towns of Italy.

Positano

Positano is the westernmost town along the Amalfi Coast, and one of the most popular destinations along this coastline. The town, located on the sides of the hills along the coast, was once the site of luxurious Roman villas, and was a prosperous port between the 15th and 17th century. Positano later declined and was just a small fishing village when it developed as a tourist destination in the 20th century.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the main church of Positano, located in the center of the town overlooking the beach. The church was built around the 12th century and was reworked in the 18th century, and features a dome adorned with majolica tiles. The church is also known for hosting a historic Byzantine icon of a black Madonna. Next to the building is a small archaeological museum hosting the ruins of a Roman villa located underneath the church.

Sentiero degli Dei

The Sentiero degli Dei (“Path of Gods”) is a footpath that runs along the Amalfi Coast, connecting the hamlet of Nocelle, in the municipality of Positano, with Praiano, located on the sea, and Agerola, in the Metropolitan City of Naples. Once the only path connecting these villages, it is now a popular hiking trail that offers great views on the coast and the sea.

Li Galli

Also known as: Sirenuse

Li Galli, or Sirenuse, is a small group of islands located off the Amalfi Coast near Positano. According to ancient mythology, this place was inhabited by sirens, creatures with bodies of a bird and a human head, while medieval interpretations of the story depicted them as mermaids. The islands have remained uninhabited for most of their history, and feature a beautiful natural environment.

Furore

Furore is a tiny village along the Amalfi Coast, that extends from the sea to the hills overlooking the coast. The town remained a small fishing village for all its history, and it is now known for its peculiar coastal inlet.

Fjord of Furore

The Fjord of Furore (Fiordo di Furore) is a ria, a small and narrow coastal inlet formed by a stream that flows from the nearby mountains. The peculiar sight of this place, carved along the rugged coastline, made it one of the most popular features along the Amalfi Coast. A small beach is located here, and above the inlet is a bridge that forms part of the road connecting the towns of the Amalfi Coast.

Conca dei Marini

Conca dei Marini is a tiny seaside resort located along the Amalfi Coast. Founded in ancient times, it was a trading port in the Middle Ages, while now it is a tourist destination.

Grotta dello Smeraldo

The Grotta dello Smeraldo (“Emerald Cave”) is a cave located along the Amalfi Coast near Conca dei Marini. The cave is partly filled with water, and has no natural opening above the sea level. The only way to visit the cave is through an elevator located along the coastal road. The cave is known for the unique sight of the light filtering through an underwater fissure to illuminate the grotto.

Amalfi

Amalfi is the main town of the Amalfi Coast, in the Province of Salerno. The town emerged during the Middle Ages as one of the richest maritime powers in the Mediterranean, and the capital of an independent republic. The city lived its golden age in the 11th century, but was later taken by the Normans, and was mostly destroyed by a tsunami in 1343. Amalfi never returned to its former glory, but it has been a major tourist destination since the 18th century, and it is now known all over the world for its beauty.

Also known as: Cathedral of Sant’Andrea (Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea)

The Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi) is the main church in the city and the most famous landmark of the Amalfi Coast. The cathedral was built in the 10th century adjacent to an older church, and was reworked several times. Now it features a blend of architectural styles, with Romanesque, Norman, Arab, Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. The facade was rebuilt in the 19th century, and features elaborate decorations and mosaics, and a medieval bronze door. The church houses various Renaissance and Baroque artworks and houses a decorated crypt. Adjacent to the cathedral is an ornate medieval bell tower and the 9th-century Basilica of Crocifisso, now serving as the Diocesan Museum of Amalfi (Museo Diocesano di Amalfi). This museum houses several artworks from the cathedral, numerous religious objects, and two ancient sarcophagi. Also part of the complex is the Chiostro del Paradiso (“Cloister of Paradise”), built in the 13th century and adorned with ancient frescoes.

Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi

The Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi (Arsenale della Repubblica di Amalfi) is an 11th-century building located near the coast in Amalfi. This place was once used to store and repair ships during the golden age of Amalfi, and now serves as a museum of local history.

Paper Museum of Amalfi

The Paper Museum of Amalfi (Museo della Carta di Amalfi) is a museum hosted in a former paper mill in the hills north of Amalfi. Paper production in Amalfi dates back to the Middle Ages, and the museum showcases this long history and houses some historic industrial machinery.

Atrani

Atrani is a tiny town located along the coast just east of Amalfi. Inhabited since ancient times, its history has always been linked with that of Amalfi. It lived its golden age around the 11th century, and was damaged by a tsunami in 1343. Now it is a tourist destination and seaside resort, and its municipality is the smallest in Italy.

Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena

The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena (Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena) is a church in Atrani, located on top of a cliff overlooking the sea. The church was built in the 13th century and was later reworked. The facade of the church is adorned with Rococo decorations, while inside it hosts various artworks.

Ravello

Ravello is a town located among the hills overlooking the sea along the Amalfi Coast. Founded in the Early Middle Ages, it became one of the main centers in the region when Amalfi was flourishing, but later declined. Now it is a popular destination thanks to its position and beautiful natural environment.

The Terrazza dell’Infinito (“Terrace of Infinity”) is a scenic panoramic terrace located inside the gardens of Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, known for its breathtaking view over the Amalfi Coast. This villa was built in the Middle Ages and reworked in the 20th century, while now it hosts a hotel. The gardens of the villa are open to the public, and house various decorations, while the panoramic terrace is adorned with statues.

Ravello Cathedral

Also known as: Church of Santa Maria Assunta and San Pantaleone (Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta e San Pantaleone)

The Ravello Cathedral (Duomo di Ravello) is the main church of the town, and was erected in the 11th century. The church was later reworked, and now features a simple facade with a medieval bronze door, while inside it houses various ancient artworks. Next to the church is a museum of religious artworks and contemporary art.

Villa Rufolo

Villa Rufolo is a historic villa located next to the Ravello Cathedral, originally built in the 13th century and remodeled in the 19th century. The entrance to the villa features a medieval tower, while the gardens are known for offering a great view over the Amalfi Coast.

Minori

Minori is a small town located along the Amalfi Coast east of Amalfi. This place was once the site of luxurious Roman villas, and shared its history with Amalfi since the Middle Ages. Minori is now a popular seaside resort.

Roman Villa of Minori

The Roman Villa of Minori (Villa Romana di Minori) is an archaeological site in Minori, dating from the 1st century. This was one of several seaside villas of wealthy Romans along the Amalfi Coast, and various areas of the large complex have been excavated. Next to the site is an archaeological museum housing numerous ancient objects and artworks.

Maiori

Maiori is a town on the Amalfi Coast, located just east of Minori. This place has been a seaside resort since ancient times, and flourished during the age of the Republic of Amalfi, but later declined. Today Maiori is a popular tourist destination, and features the longest beach along the Amalfi Coast.

Collegiate Church of Santa Maria a Mare

The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria a Mare (Collegiata di Santa Maria a Mare) is the main church of Maiori. The church is located on top of a cliff in the center of the town, and was erected in the 13th century. It features some artworks, but it is best known for its peculiar position.

Vietri sul Mare

Vietri sul Mare is the easternmost town of the Amalfi Coast, located just west of Salerno. Inhabited since ancient times, it is known since the 15th century for the production of ceramics. The town is also a seaside resort, and is considered to be the gateway to the Amalfi Coast.

Ceramics Museum of Vietri sul Mare

The Ceramics Museum of Vietri sul Mare (Museo della Ceramica di Vietri sul Mare) is a museum dedicated to the long history of the production of ceramics in Vietri sul Mare. The museum houses a collection of elaborate historic ceramic artworks.
