Sicily

<< Insular Italy

Sicily is the largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean Sea, and the southernmost region of Italy. Around Sicily are various archipelagos, such as the Aeolian Islands, the Aegadian Islands, and the Pelagie Islands, as well as the island of Pantelleria. Sicily has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and was colonized by the Phoenicians and the Greeks, with some of the colonies flourishing as the richest and most powerful cities in the Mediterranean. Sicily was an important province during the Roman age, and was briefly ruled by the Vandals and the Ostrogoths before being taken by the Byzantines in the 6th century. Between the 9th and 11th century, Sicily was ruled by the Arabs and lived a period of prosperity that later continued when the Normans took the island. The Kingdom of Sicily ruled the island from the 12th century until the 19th century, and was governed by various different dynasties. After a period as part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Sicily joined Italy when the country was unified. Today Sicily is one of the most visited regions of Italy, with a unique culture, cuisine, music, and literature, and it is famous for its rich artistic heritage, a result of its peculiar history and the blend of different peoples. Sicily features many archaeological sites and historic landmarks, but also numerous seaside resorts with beautiful beaches, and houses Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe.
