Liguria

<< Northwest Italy

Liguria is a region in Northwest Italy, located along the coast south of Piedmont and squeezed between the mountains and the sea. Originally inhabited by Ligurian tribes, it was later conquered by the Romans, flourishing thanks to its many ports. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the region was dominated by foreign powers, until Genoa emerged as a major maritime republic in the Late Middle Ages. Genoa slowly conquered all of Liguria, and became one of the richest cities in Europe thanks to its commercial empire. As the main European trade routes moved out of the Mediterranean, the importance of Genoa declined, and its republic fell during the Napoleonic invasion. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Liguria became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and it joined Italy when the country was unified. In the 19th and 20th century Liguria experienced a remarkable economic growth, thanks to its ports and many industrial centers. Liguria is now one of the most popular Italian regions among tourists, best known for its stunningly beautiful coast.
