Perugia

<< Umbria

Perugia is the capital and largest city of Umbria, located in the center of the region, among the hills and near the Tiber river. Originally an Umbrian settlement, it was later one of the main Etruscan cities, before being taken by the Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Ostrogoths conquered the city, which was later ruled by the Byzantines and the Papal States. In the Late Middle Ages, Perugia was a free comune and then a signoria, and it hosted five papal conclaves. Despite several wars, it remained under papal rule until the 19th century, when it became part of Italy. Perugia is now known for its rich artistic heritage and its contributions to the Renaissance, but also as an university town.
