Veneto

<< Northeast Italy

Veneto is one of the most visited regions in Europe, hosting a wide variety of different attractions that range from high mountains to beautiful beaches, from cities of arts and culture to traditional villages. It features some of the most popular destinations in Italy, most notably its capital Venice, one of the most unique cities in the world. Veneto is also noted for its distinct culture and language, a product of its long and rich history. Originally inhabited by the Venetic tribes, Veneto flourished under the Romans and later saw fierce wars between the local powers during the Middle Ages. Venice eventually emerged victorious and its Republic dominated over the region and beyond, becoming a rich and powerful merchant state and establishing a trade empire that spanned the entire Mediterranean. After the Republic of Venice fell to Napoleon, Veneto was ruled by Austria before finally becoming part of Italy in 1866. Now it is remarkable not only for its thriving tourism sector, but also for its industry and agriculture, that make it one of the richest regions in Italy.
