Il castello ha una lunga storia che risale all'Alto Medioevo. Fu qui che l'ultimo re longobardo d'Italia, Berengario II, fu assediato da Ottone I di Sassonia tra il 961 e il 963. Il castello appartenne per secoli ad alcune delle pi\u00f9 potenti famiglie nobiliari italiane, come i Montefeltro, i Malatesta, e i Della Rovere. La fortezza fu pesantemente rimaneggiata durante il Rinascimento, acquisendo l'aspetto attuale, e successivamente fu utilizzata come prigione fino all'inizio del ventesimo secolo.
