La regione prende il nome dai cinque villaggi situati lungo la costa, che furono fondati nell'Alto Medioevo. La seicentesca <strong>Chiesa di San Francesco<\/strong>, con l'attiguo convento, domina la citt\u00e0 dal promontorio, mentre la gotica <strong>Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista<\/strong> si erge al centro dell'antico citt\u00e0. Il simbolo pi\u00f9 riconoscibile di Vernazza \u00e8 il <strong>Castello Doria<\/strong>, una fortificazione situata in cima a un'alta rupe sul mare. Corniglia \u00e8 collegata al mare e alla stazione ferroviaria tramite una lunga scalinata chiamata <strong>Lardarina<\/strong>. Il sentiero un tempo era utilizzato dalla gente del posto per spostarsi tra i paesi, e ora \u00e8 una delle principali attrazioni della zona. Located on top of a cliff, it is the only one of the five towns with no direct access to the sea. Corniglia is linked with the sea and the train station via a long stairway called Lardarina. A panoramic terrace on the cliffside in Corniglia offers a great view on the Ligurian Sea.
