Abitata fin dalla preistoria, fu originariamente fondata dai Liguri e successivamente divenne una citt\u00e0 romana. Piccolo centro per tutto l'Alto Medioevo, Genova assunse importanza nell'undicesimo e dodicesimo secolo dopo aver partecipato alle Crociate. La Repubblica di Genova divenne una delle potenze commerciali e navali pi\u00f9 ricche d'Europa, rivaleggiando con <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmundus.com\/it\/destinations\/venice\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\">Venezia<\/a> e stabilendo numerose colonie nel Mediterraneo e nel Mar Nero. Dopo un periodo di declino, Genova torn\u00f2 ad essere una grande potenza nel sedicesimo secolo, sotto il dominio di Andrea Doria e in associazione con l'Impero Spagnolo. Le banche genovesi furono i principali finanziatori delle spedizioni spagnole in America, e la citt\u00e0 divenne una delle pi\u00f9 ricche d'Europa con lo sfruttamento del Nuovo Mondo. Tuttavia, Genova declin\u00f2 lentamente, perdendo le sue colonie e affrontando rivolte e guerre. La Repubblica di Genova cadde durante le guerre napoleoniche, sostituita inizialmente dalla Repubblica Ligure e poi annessa alla Francia.
