The town was founded around the 5th century BCE by the Salassi, and it was later a Roman city known as <em>Eporedia<\/em>. During the Middle Ages, Ivrea was the capital of a Lombard duchy and later a free <em>comune<\/em>, before coming under the rule of the Savoy family. In the early 20th century Ivrea became an important industrial center, hosting the headquarters of typewriter manufacturer Olivetti. It was erected during the Middle Ages in Romanesque style, replacing a previous church, and it was later reworked. The church features two bell towers and a Neoclassical facade, and it houses numerous interesting art pieces. The area includes historic factories, office buildings, and the <strong>Unit\u00e0 Residenziale Ovest<\/strong>, a residential building completed in 1971 and also known as <strong>Talponia<\/strong>. A historical archive with many documents on the company is also located in the same area. A series of panels explaining the history of the complex are located around the area, and make up the <strong>Open-Air Museum of Modern Architecture<\/strong> (<em>Museo a Cielo Aperto dell\u2019Architettura Moderna<\/em>). This Romanesque bell tower was erected in the 11th or 12th century as part of a church, but the site was later abandoned and demolished in the 18th century.
