Founded in ancient times, it emerged as a major religious center in the Early Middle Ages thanks to its powerful abbey. The town was the most important settlement in the area for centuries, and it was influenced by the culture of all the surrounding regions. Over its history, it was ruled by many different powers, finally becoming part of the Kingdom of Sardinia<\/a> in the 18th century. After the Italian unification, its territory was initially moved to the Province of Pavia<\/a>, and then split between Lombardy, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna.
