Molise is a region of Italy located along the Adriatic coast in the south of the country, tucked between Abruzzo<\/a>, Lazio<\/a>, Campania<\/a>, and Apulia<\/a>. Anciently inhabited by Italic peoples such as the Samnites, it was later conquered by the Romans. During the Middle Ages, the region was ruled by the Lombards and the Normans, later becoming part of the Kingdom of Sicily<\/a> and then the Kingdom of Naples<\/a>. For centuries the area was known as the County of Molise, and after the unification of Italy it became part of the region Abruzzi e Molise. In 1963 Molise was separated to become its own region, with the split becoming effective in 1970. Small and sparsely populated, Molise is mostly occupied by hills and mountains dotted with tiny villages. Despite being much less visited by tourists then other Italian regions, Molise still offers several historic sites and a beautiful natural environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
