This area was first settled by humans 700,000 years ago, which makes it one of the oldest sites of its kind in Europe. The abbey was founded in the 8th century on the site of a church built between the 5th and 6th century. This monastery, erected in Lombard style, was destroyed in the 9th century, but some ruins are visible today.
