Founded by Italic peoples, it was later a flourishing Roman town with the name <em>Interamnia Praetutia<\/em>. In the Middle Ages it was ruled by the Byzantines and the Lombards, before becoming part of the Kingdom of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmundus.com\/atlas\/europe\/southern-europe\/italy\/insular-italy\/sicily\/\" class=\"ek-link\">Sicily<\/a> and then the Kingdom of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmundus.com\/destinations\/naples\/\" class=\"ek-link\">Naples<\/a>, sharing its history with the rest of the region. The cathedral features a large Gothic portal on its facade, while inside it hosts several artworks, including an elaborate silver antependium and a polyptych, both from the 15th century. Here are the ruins of a Roman villa erected in the 1st century BCE, and the <strong>Church of Sant&#8217;Anna dei Pompetti<\/strong>, built in the 6th century. Behind this church is the <strong>Torre Bruciata<\/strong> (&#8220;Burned Tower&#8221;), a Roman fortification built in the 2nd century BCE and reworked in the Middle Ages. In 1156 the tower was damaged by a fire, hence its name. Damaged by various sieges, the fort has been restored, and now it houses a museum of historic weapons and maps. The site features a modern sanctuary and an older church with a monumental facade and some historic artworks.
