Inhabited since ancient times, it was a small port and fortified position for most of its history, until it was developed as an industrial center in the late 19th century. The most famous is the <strong>Fontana La Nave<\/strong>, a monumental fountain made in 1987 by Pietro Cascella, which depicts an ancient ship. Part of the promenade is <strong>Ponte del Mare<\/strong>, one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Europe, which crosses the Pescara river that cuts the city in two.
