The town was founded by the Romans as <em>Pisaurum<\/em> in 184 BCE, and during the Early Middle Ages it was one of the five cities of the Byzantine Pentapolis. Pesaro was later a free <em>comune<\/em> and then a <em>signoria<\/em> ruled by the houses of Montefeltro, Sforza, and Della Rovere, before becoming part of the Papal States and finally Italy.
