Founded in ancient times, it was a Roman town with the name <em>Firmum Picenum<\/em>. During the Middle Ages it was first the capital of the March of Fermo and then a free <em>comune<\/em>. The city was eventually taken by the Papal States and finally became part of Italy when the country was unified. The current church was built starting in the 13th century over some previous structures and on the site of an ancient temple. The facade features a blend of Romanesque and Gothic elements while the Neoclassical interior houses various artworks. The crypt under the cathedral hosts some relics and a Paleochristian sarcophagus dating from around the 4th century.
