Founded by the Umbri around the 8th or 7th century BCE, Todi was later a Roman town and then a free <em>comune<\/em> in the Late Middle Ages, before becoming part of the Papal States. On the southern side is <strong>Palazzo dei Priori<\/strong>, a 14th-century Gothic palace. Next to it are <strong>Palazzo del Capitano<\/strong> and <strong>Palazzo del Popolo<\/strong>, which were built in Gothic style during the 13th century. These two buildings now serve as town hall and also host the <strong>Civic Museum<\/strong> (<em>Museo Civico<\/em>), a museum of local art and archaeology. The church features Romanesque and Gothic elements and its facade has a large rose window and a decorated portal. The church has a central Greek cross plan and a large dome, and features various decorations and artworks. This was supposedly the place where Saint Francis of Assisi lived as a hermit during Lent, probably in 1211.
